Staying educated

There has been much talk on whether having an education is as important as it once was.

Some say you need a college degree in order to just be able to even get an interview. Many companies expect their potential employees to be educated in the feild they are applying for.

So they do no have to spend time and money on teaching them something they should know by now.

But not everybody wants to go to a four-year liberal arts school. For those people there are vocational schools, schools that can teach you how to become a mechanic or even a chef.

Whatever your interests may be, there is a school for that.

Real world experience is important but is hard to come across if you do not have an education that says you are capable of accomplishing what the job entails.

School will always be imporant and you will never regret going to a class or course that your job offers you. You may not get promoted for completing it but it is something that you can take with you and may help you out in the future.

If you work is willing to pay you to take a few classes a year, take the oppertunity. Even if its not for credit.

Study tips

1) One of the best ways to learn information, is to review and look over notes that you took in class, right after class is over. It keeps the material fresh in your mind.

2) Study the most important information first. For example, what the teacher hinted at or repeated over and over agin, is a good place to start.

3) Memorizing is not studying and does not make you smarter.

4) Having jazz or classical music play softly in the background can help with stress.

5) Do not study any later than the time you usually go to sleep. It can be too tempting for your body to want to go to sleep and not study.

Extra curricular activities and grades

When parents see their children are having a hard time in school or are a little distracted, they consider taking their child off of a sports team, or out of band for example.

But by doing this, does not gaurantee a child suddenly making the grade. When one has a timeline to stick to and their extra fun activities make them tired and worn out, they will only have so much time for home-work. Meaning, now they do not have all the time in the world to work on school and they need to choose their time wisely.

According to the National Center For Education Statistics, students who participate in activies outside of class have a 15 percent higher attendance rate than their peers who do not.

Club organizations and sports teams, often hold meetings and if one too many are missed it results in not being able to participate as much. This is where children can learn that attendance is important in all aspects of life.

When students are ready to head off for college, having extra curricular activities can look good on a college resume and show the university that they are commited and can time manage effetively.

So parents don’t pull your child off of a team or club just yet. There might be more advantages than you think.

The effects of procrastination

Students have always been know for their procrastination. Knowing that they have an upcoming test, a project due or a debate to prepare for, students can’t help but wait to the very last minute to start!

Yes, it is possible to finish or get a good grade for school if you wait to the end until you begin. However, there are disadvantages to staying up late and cramming  facts and figures into your brain until you feel like you could explode of information overload.

Studying for an exam the day before or worse, night before really does not ensure you understand what you just went over.

Here is where memorizing comes into play. Students can memeorize and drill bits and pieces of information into their head without really knowing what they are talking about.

This is why after exams are over they forget everything they just “studied.” And when a project is due and you are trying to just get it done, your teacher will know whether you tell them or not. Especially, if they know what you are cable of all ready.

So students should learn their lesson and prioitize better. You have more time than you think. So don’t wait start now!

Home Schooling

What is home schooling- the practice of teaching children in the home as an alternative to attending public or private elementary or high school.

Reasons why parents may take their children out of the school systems is because they disagree with how their child is being taught and what they are being taught.

When a parent puts their child into home schooling, they take matters into their own hands.

They have the opportunity to determine the curriculum and can show their children that learning can be fun and exiciting.

Also parents can give more attention to their children if they struggle in a certain subject. And cater to their needs. Unlike in a classroom setting with one teacher and many students.

According to the National Center For Education Statistics in the school year of 2011-2013 91 percent of parents said, the school environment was a big reason for the change into home schooling.

However, drawbacks can occur such as socialization issues. For example, not being around other students of a similiar age throughout the day. Not attenting school functions, such as sporting events or dances, can leave home schoolers feeling left out.

Home schooling is not for everybody but many students can benefit from it.

Summer school is not a punishment

Many parents tell their children if they do not pass a class or behave better they will be forced to go to summer school. As a child your summer’s are for playing outside with friends, family vacations and just being a kid.

It is seen more as a punishment than as getting ahead of your peers, or working on something that you struggle with.

In college, summer school is seen as an opportunity. A chance to get into a class that you missed out on previously that school year. Or to repeat a class you didn’t do so well on.

Summer school offers a different environment compared to the traditional school year. The classes are smaller and the professor has more time to focus on what the class is having a difficult time on.

Another benefit of taking a class during the summer months, is less distraction. Only taking one course can help a student focus on that particular subject. They do no have to worry about juggling other classes.

Summer school is a great way to keep yourself from getting lazy. It is not as full throtle as the typical school semesters are but it does prevent one from forgoing their study habits.

Give it a try.
